Winfried Conradi (Peter Simonischek) is a divorced German music teacher with a penchant for jokes. His adult daughter Ines (Sandra Hüller) is a driven business woman who travels around the world. Father and daughter could not be more different: The soulful hippie of the 1968 generation contrasts with his daughter, an ambitious global management consultant who tries to raise her profile in a male dominated world at an outsourcing project in Romania. Winfried spontaneously decides to fly to Bucharest to visit his estranged daughter. But the visit does not lead to a rapprochement. Winfried annoys his daughter with pranks and little jabs at her routine lifestyle of long meetings, hotel bars and performance reports. Father and daughter reach an impasse, and Winfried agrees to return to Germany. Enter flashy “Toni Erdmann” – Winfried’s smooth-talking alter ego. Disguised in a tacky suit, weird wig and fake teeth, Toni barges into Ines’s professional life, claiming to be her CEO’s life coach. As Toni, Winfried is bolder and doesn’t hold back, but Ines meets the challenge. The harder they clash, the closer they become; and Ines begins to realize that her eccentric father deserves some place in her life after all. Toni Erdmann received the FIPRESCI Award for Best Film in Competition at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival, it won as Best Foreign Language Film during the 2016 New York Film Critics Circle Awards, and it was nominated for an Academy Award in 2017.
