Nobuko Yamasaki

Nobuko Yamasaki completed her Ph.D. in Comparative Literature at the University of Washington in 2014. Her research and teaching focus on the intersections of art, film, media, literature, and gender and sexuality studies. Her current research project, “Fragmenting History: Prostitutes, Hostesses, and Actresses at the Edge of Empire” examines women’s bodies as battlefields, where asymmetrical power dynamics meet, compete and complicate one another, producing narratives to be challenged, fragmented, and re-articulated from within. The project involves a chapter that concerns Japanese films, performed by a multi-lingual actress, Yamaguchi Yoshiko (1920-2014), also known as Ri Kôran or Lǐ Xiānglán.
